Description Share Post If The Invader Comes Tom Palmer (Barrington Stoke) If The Invader Comes is set in 1940-41, initially in the aftermath of the defeat at Dunkirk. Tom Palmer has been inspired by real events and places in telling a story about the the impact of the Second World War on people living in a rural area. He offers a rare insight into the effect of the hostilities on a Cornwall community living in a coastal town. Following Dunkirk, Britain is fearful of a Nazi invasion. This backdrop sees three children, whose parents are secretly involved in the work to defeat the enemy, brought together as allies themselves. Bobble, Cadan and Cilla team up to support their parents. Each of them have their own concerns: Bobble’s father is a First World War veteran and suffers from PTSD; Cadan has to care for his dad’s fishing boat; and Cilla’s American mother was killed in an aviation accident. Furthermore, the war has fomented suspicion among many of the local people. ‘Difference’ has become a target for rumour and gossip and the children are targeted. As the children have to confront the harsh realities of war, they also discover reserves of courage. Further, their friendship and understanding of each other’s worries develop. They become further involved in the war effort, but this involvement brings danger and conflict. This is a hugely compelling read. Particularly impressive is the relationship between the children and their families. The vivid locality and life on the Home Front is conveyed with great empathy and sensitivity. Bookwagon strongly recommends Tom Palmer’s books, particularly those set during the Second World War, such as Resist.
